Dumont challenges Sununu on Coronavirus Response

Updated: Sep 4

In an effort to protect working families from the ravages of the novel Coronavirus (Covid19) and to reduce the chance of community spread Sununu issued Emergency Order #2.  Read how Zachary explains the impact of such an action.

TO: Governor Christopher T. Sununu

RE: NH Rooms & Meals Taxes

Governor Sununu,

In an effort to protect working families from the ravages of the novel coronavirus (COIVD-19) and to reduce the chance of community spread, you issued Emergency Order #2 Pursuant to Executive Order 2020-04 - mandating the near-total closure of many establishments and an end to social gatherings.

Of the many establishments now facing long-term closure, New Hampshire restaurants and their respective employees have been seriously harmed. While some have been able to transition to takeout/carryout service, not all have been able to remain open. To put it plainly, there are many who are going to suffer over the next weeks. This decision was a difficulty one for many to come to grips with. I respect the conviction with which you made it but today, I ask for your assistance.

You recently issued Emergency Order #6 Pursuant to Executive Order 2020-04 - allowing for the sale of beer and win, as a stopgap measure to help sustain restaurants and bars. I call upon your office to issue an additional Order that would exempt affected New Hampshire businesses from the NH Rooms & Meals taxes until such time that the COVID-19 risks have been minimized that New Hampshire restaurants can once again reopen. Restaurants, hotels, the car rental industry, and many other businesses are feeling the effects of this disturbance and we cannot remain silent waiting for this to blow over.

Exempting our business community from these taxes is but one of the few things we can do during our current crisis to stem the effects that this temporary shuttering has caused and will further show the people of New Hampshire that you stand with them. The business community has worked hard to keep our economy strong and we depend upon them to be there for us once COVID-19 has passed. I ask that you continue your efforts and lend us a helping hand.

Your Sincerest Thanks,

Zachary S. Dumont
